Terje Haakonsen - Above the Arctic Circle
This was the very first official Arctic Challenge which took place on the Lofoten islands in northern Norway. Terje had a vision of progressing snowboarding as he was fed up with the formats and conditions of the traditional snowboard events. Well, when we showed up there we knew where he was coming from. Probably one of the biggest pipes and certainly the biggest quarterpipe anybody had ever seen were awaiting us. I’m still amazed at how they managed to get that done out of snow in this rugged place. The event had several lay days scheduled in which we could go fishing, surfing while waiting for the ideal day and weather conditions for the event to take place. Terje of course proved once again that he was the master of transitions and won the highest air in the qp. This event was the start of the modern snowboard competitions that we know today.
